Sized for an actual doorway, courtyard or floor rather than for a photograph.
A paper or fabric star lantern lit from inside and hung at the window or from the balcony — the specific Kerala and South Indian Christmas marker, and far more distinctive than a generic tree.
Typical spend: ₹300–₹1,200
Build the crib from coconut husk, hay, moss and small clay figures rather than plastic sets. In Kerala and Goa, church cribs are often elaborate community projects with coir and coconut shell work.
Typical spend: ₹500–₹3,000
Even a small tree with warm-white lights and handmade decorations reads well. Avoid the multicoloured flashing strings — warm white suits an Indian home interior better and looks better in photographs.
Typical spend: ₹1,000–₹5,000
If you are organising a carol group, a portable battery lantern and a song sheet per person matter more than decor. Plan the route to end at a house where snacks are served — that is the actual Indian carolling structure.
Typical spend: ₹200–₹600
Most rangoli failures are symmetry failures. Draw the outer circle with a compass or a plate, then divide it into equal wedges with chalk. You can pour colour over the chalk and it disappears.
Dry rice flour holds an edge far better than wet powder and is what the traditional doorway versions are drawn with. Keep a small bowl separate for touch-ups.
Layers added from the middle keep the shape honest. Working inwards tends to leave you compressing the last ring to fit, which is what makes a rangoli look rushed.
A lightly damp floor holds powder. A wet one makes it bleed. One pass with a damp cloth on a stone floor is enough; back off completely on tile with a glossy finish.
