Sized for an actual doorway, courtyard or floor rather than for a photograph.
Line the doorway, balcony edge and boundary wall with clay diyas filled with mustard oil. Keep them at least 15 cm away from curtains and rangoli powder. Use a shallow tray of sand for the floor row so hot oil cannot tip onto the ground.
Typical spend: ₹100–₹300
Draw a compact circular rangoli at the threshold, then walk small painted footprints inwards from the gate towards the puja room. The footprints are the Lakshmi motif and take ten minutes with a stencil.
Typical spend: ₹150–₹500
One compact rangoli sticker, a small diya tray and a marigold garland on the workstation edge. Shared floor decoration is usually coordinated by the admin team — volunteer for the entrance arch, which is the most visible spot.
Typical spend: ₹400–₹1,500
Most rangoli failures are symmetry failures. Draw the outer circle with a compass or a plate, then divide it into equal wedges with chalk. You can pour colour over the chalk and it disappears.
Dry rice flour holds an edge far better than wet powder and is what the traditional doorway versions are drawn with. Keep a small bowl separate for touch-ups.
Layers added from the middle keep the shape honest. Working inwards tends to leave you compressing the last ring to fit, which is what makes a rangoli look rushed.
A lightly damp floor holds powder. A wet one makes it bleed. One pass with a damp cloth on a stone floor is enough; back off completely on tile with a glossy finish.
