Pratipada (1st tithi) of Shukla Paksha in Kartik, the day after Diwali
Govardhan Puja falls on the first day of the bright half of Kartik, immediately after Diwali. In 2026 it is Monday 9 November. The day is also known as Annakut or Annakoot, meaning a mountain of food, and in Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra it is Bali Pratipada, the beginning of the Gujarati new year.
The story is Krishna's lifting of the Govardhan hill. When Indra sent torrential rain to punish the people of Braj for shifting their worship from him to Krishna, Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan hill on one finger and held it as a shelter for seven days and nights. When Indra conceded, the people of Braj were told to continue their older practice of honouring the hill and the cattle that gave them their livelihood.
The central ritual is the construction of a small model of Govardhan hill from cow dung, which is decorated with flowers and grain and worshipped along with the cows. The phrase 'annakut' refers to the huge spread of food offered — a hundred and eight or more dishes in temples, a smaller but still generous spread in homes.
Cattle are washed, their horns painted, and they are garlanded and fed first before the family eats. The day is genuinely about gratitude to the natural systems that produce food, which is why it is one of the few Hindu festivals explicitly about ecology rather than a deity's biography.

In the order a household actually does them.
Shape a mound from cow dung or mud in the courtyard, place a small Krishna figure on top, and surround it with tiny cow figures. Decorate with grain, flowers and small sugarcane pieces.
Bathe the cows and bullocks early in the morning, apply turmeric and kumkum with a tilak on the forehead, paint or decorate the horns, and garland them. Feed them first and only then eat.
Cook a spread of vegetarian dishes — the aspiration is 56 (chhappan bhog) or 108 in temples. Offer each to the Govardhan model and then distribute as prasad.
Walk around the Govardhan model seven times in the courtyard, or, at Govardhan in Braj, complete the full 21 km parikrama of the hill.
In industrial and workshop settings, machinery, tools and vehicles are cleaned, decorated with flowers and kumkum, and worshipped, followed by a community meal.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.

Celebrated as Bali Pratipada, the Gujarati new year. Homes are decorated with the new year rangoli, new ledgers are opened, and 'Saal Mubarak' is exchanged all day. It is one of the busiest shopping and gifting days of the Gujarati year.
Observed as Bali Pratipada, associated with King Bali. Wives perform the ritual of applying oil to their husbands' foreheads, and the day is considered auspicious for new beginnings.
Frequently observed as Vishwakarma Puja alongside Govardhan Puja. Shops, workshops and vehicles are decorated with flowers, kumkum and garlands and worshipped before opening.
Observed as Bali Padyami or Bali Pratipada, associated with King Bali's rule over the earth. The day is considered auspicious for buying new things and starting work.
Gift categories, honestly described — not a list of sponsored products.
Directly on-theme — the day is about feeding cattle before yourself, and gaushala donations are the standard way to mark it.
Suits: parents, grandparents, family
In Gujarat the day is the new year, so a hamper of fafda, jalebi and dry fruit works the way a Diwali hamper works elsewhere.
Suits: family, relatives, neighbours
Chopda Puja and the new accounting year make a good set of ledgers and a fine pen a genuinely appropriate business gift on this day.
Suits: business owner, accountant, shopkeeper, self
Annakut is about grain, so a basket of good-quality rice, dal, millet and ghee is on-theme and actually consumed.
Suits: parents, in-laws, family

Build a mound of clay or cow dung about 30 cm high on a wooden board, place a small Krishna idol on top, and stud it with wheat ears, marigold and tiny cow figurines. Keep it outdoors or in a well-ventilated spot — cow dung needs air.
Budget: ₹0–₹300
Turmeric, kumkum, a garland and non-toxic paint for the horns. If you use paint, use food-grade colour — anything solvent-based on a cow's horns is a real hazard.
Budget: ₹100–₹400
Arrange the offered dishes in small steel bowls on a round thali in concentric rings, with the sweet at the centre. The concentric layout is what makes an Annakut look like a mountain rather than a random buffet.

Yes. In Gujarat, the day after Diwali is Bali Pratipada and the start of the Gujarati new year, when new account books are opened and 'Saal Mubarak' is exchanged.
It is a 21 km circumambulation of the Govardhan hill in Uttar Pradesh, traditionally completed on Govardhan Puja. Many pilgrims walk it barefoot, and it takes five to seven hours.
