Shravana Purnima (full moon of the Hindu month of Shravana)
Raksha Bandhan falls on the full moon of Shravana, and in 2026 it is Friday 28 August. A sister ties a rakhi — a decorative thread — around her brother's wrist, applies a tilak, and prays for his wellbeing; the brother gives a gift and a promise of protection. It is one of the strongest gifting occasions in the Indian calendar.
The day is observed by the same full moon under several other names. In Maharashtra and coastal Gujarat it is Narali Purnima, when the fishing community offers coconuts to the sea before the new fishing season begins — the monsoon ban on fishing lifts around this time. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala the same full moon is Avani Avittam or Upakarma, when Brahmins change their sacred thread. In Odisha it is Gamha Purnima, with a traditional bullock race.
Although the ritual is nominally between siblings, in practice it extends far. Rakhi is tied between cousins, neighbours, soldiers and citizens, and during the nationalist movement rakhi was used as a symbol of solidarity across communities. In many Indian schools and offices, rakhis are tied between friends of all genders.
The commercial significance is enormous: rakhi is sold in enormous volumes, and the day is one of the largest online gifting deadlines of the year, particularly for siblings living in different cities. Threads, sweets, chocolate boxes and, increasingly, digital rakhi and e-rakhi services all move in the week before.

May God protect you the way you've always protected me. Happy Raksha Bandhan!
Sending love, rakhi and sweets across the distance. Happy Raksha Bandhan!
In the order a household actually does them.
A thali with roli, rice or akshat, a small diya, rakhi threads, sweets and a coconut. Some families add dahi and honey for the aarti.
The sister applies a tilak of roli and rice on the brother's forehead, then ties the rakhi on his right wrist. The thread's knot should face outwards.
Perform a short aarti with the diya and then offer sweets by hand. The brother traditionally says he will protect his sister, and gives the gift.
Offer a coconut to the sea in the morning, before the season's first fishing trip. The coconut is thrown into the water with a prayer for a safe season.
Change the sacred thread in the morning, with tarpanam for ancestors performed first. New initiates receive the thread for the first time.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.

The same full moon is Narali Purnima. The fishing community offers a coconut to the sea before starting the new fishing season, and boat decoration is a visible part of the day.
Observed as Avani Avittam or Upakarma, when Brahmin men change their sacred thread and recite the Vedas after a ritual bath. Rakhi tying is common in north-Indian communities in the cities.
Gamha Purnima, with the traditional bullock race held in Balasore and Cuttack districts. Rakhi is also observed, particularly in urban areas.
Observed as Jhulan Purnima, associated with the Radha-Krishna swing festival. Rakhi tying is common among Marwari and North Indian communities in Kolkata.

A brass thali with rakhis on one side, roli and rice in small bowls, sweets at the centre, and a diya. Keep the roli and rice in separate small bowls rather than heaped — a clean thali photographs far better than a cluttered one.
Budget: ₹0–₹400
If several siblings are visiting, set up a table with paper, string and tags so gifts get wrapped as they arrive. Practical rather than decorative, but it is what makes the day feel organised.
Budget: ₹200–₹600

Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday 28 August 2026, on Shravana Purnima. The rakhi muhurat is traditionally before the full moon, so most families tie rakhi in the morning or early afternoon — check the muhurat for your city.
The rakhi is a thread of protection. The sister prays for her brother's wellbeing and the brother accepts a responsibility to protect and support her. The custom is not restricted to blood siblings and is frequently extended to cousins and close friends.
The Maharashtrian and coastal Gujarati name for the same Shravana Purnima, when the fishing community offers a coconut to the sea before beginning the new fishing season after the monsoon ban.
The South Indian observance on Shravana Purnima when Brahmin men change their sacred thread (yajnopavita) and recite the Vedas after a ritual bath. It is also called Upakarma.
Yes, but ship at least 10–14 days early. Rakhi sets are generally customs-safe, but avoid including food items, seeds or dried plant material, which can be held at the border.
