The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Raksha Bandhan follows Shravana Purnima (full moon of the Hindu month of Shravana). The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Raksha Bandhan 2026
Raksha Bandhan falls on Friday 28 August 2026, on Shravana Purnima. The rakhi muhurat is traditionally before the full moon, so most families tie rakhi in the morning or early afternoon — check the muhurat for your city.
The rakhi is a thread of protection. The sister prays for her brother's wellbeing and the brother accepts a responsibility to protect and support her. The custom is not restricted to blood siblings and is frequently extended to cousins and close friends.
The Maharashtrian and coastal Gujarati name for the same Shravana Purnima, when the fishing community offers a coconut to the sea before beginning the new fishing season after the monsoon ban.
The South Indian observance on Shravana Purnima when Brahmin men change their sacred thread (yajnopavita) and recite the Vedas after a ritual bath. It is also called Upakarma.
