Raksha Bandhan 2026
Raksha Bandhan follows Shravana Purnima (full moon of the Hindu month of Shravana). It runs for about 1 day nationally.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The strongest rakhi gifting culture, with the full thali ritual. Rakhi to soldiers and to married sisters (in some communities) are both observed. Ghaziabad and Bareilly have large rakhi manufacturing clusters.
The same full moon is Narali Purnima. The fishing community offers a coconut to the sea before starting the new fishing season, and boat decoration is a visible part of the day.
Observed as Avani Avittam or Upakarma, when Brahmin men change their sacred thread and recite the Vedas after a ritual bath. Rakhi tying is common in north-Indian communities in the cities.
Gamha Purnima, with the traditional bullock race held in Balasore and Cuttack districts. Rakhi is also observed, particularly in urban areas.
Observed as Jhulan Purnima, associated with the Radha-Krishna swing festival. Rakhi tying is common among Marwari and North Indian communities in Kolkata.
