Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. In 2026 it falls on 3 April. It is the most solemn day of the Christian year, and in India it is a public holiday in most states.
The observance is deliberately austere. Churches are stripped of decoration, altars are bare, and the service — the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion — is quiet, without the usual bells and often without a full mass. Many Christians fast or eat only one simple meal, and the day is a public holiday, which allows families to attend the three-hour afternoon devotion that runs from noon to 3 pm, marking the hours of the crucifixion.
In India, devotion takes several forms. On the Konkan coast, the Way of the Cross processions in Goa and Mangalore are major public events, and the Bombay East Indian parishes hold extensive street processions. In Kerala, Lent and Holy Week are observed with particular rigour, and Good Friday is one of the most strictly observed fast days of the year — many households take only kanji and payar (rice gruel with green gram) as a single meal.
The day is followed by Holy Saturday and then Easter Sunday, and the contrast between the two is the point: the Indian Christian vocabulary for the period moves from the austerity of Good Friday to the celebration of Easter, with the return of meat, sweets and celebration on Sunday.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
The most rigorous observance in India. Good Friday fasting is widely kept, the traditional meal is kanji and payar, and most businesses close. The Way of the Cross processions in parishes such as Arthunkal and Malayattoor draw very large crowds — Malayattoor is one of the major Catholic pilgrimage sites in the country.
Large street-level Way of the Cross processions, with parishes in Panaji, Margao and Mangalore holding multi-hour public processions that the wider community attends.
The East Indian parishes in Bandra, Mazagaon and Khotachiwadi observe Good Friday with extensive processions and church services, and the day is a public holiday.
Observed in Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and the districts with significant Catholic populations, with afternoon services and fasting.
Good Friday is a public holiday and a strictly observed day, with church services across the states and businesses remaining largely closed.
