Shukla Paksha of Chaitra, ending on Ram Navami
Chaitra Navratri is the spring counterpart to the larger Shardiya Navratri, beginning on the first day of the Hindu new year and ending on Ram Navami. In 2026 Ghatasthapana is on 19 March and the ninth day, Ram Navami, is on 27 March.
The structure mirrors the autumn Navratri — nine nights, nine forms of Durga, Ghatasthapana on day one and Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami — but the observance is generally quieter. In North India it is largely a home and fasting festival; in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Gudi Padwa and the Gujarati new year fall on day one, which makes the first day more prominent than the last.
This Navratri marks the start of the Hindu year in the Vikram Samvat calendar, so many families use the first day to open new account books, start new ventures and do a home puja. In Himachal Pradesh, the Navratri at Chaitra is closely tied to the Jwalamukhi and Chintpurni temple fairs.

In the order a household actually does them.
Day 1
Install the kalash and sow barley in a clay pot within the Ghatasthapana muhurat. Read the panchang for the correct window — it is narrow on some years.
Day 8–9
Invite young girls for Kanya Pujan and serve puri, halwa and chana. Perform a havan on Navami and distribute the sprouted barley as prasad.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.

The Gujarati new year, with the change of the Samvat year, new account books and Ghatasthapana puja.
