Navami of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra, the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri
Ram Navami marks the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, on the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra. In 2026 it falls on Friday 27 March. It is the closing day of Chaitra Navratri, which begins on Gudi Padwa and Ugudi.
The day is observed with a fast, a midday puja (Rama is believed to have been born at noon), and the reading of the Ramayana or the Ramcharitmanas. In Ayodhya, the birthplace, the Ram Janmabhoomi temple sees its largest congregation of the year, and the Sarayu is the site of a ritual bath.
In South India the day is a major temple festival, particularly at the Bhadrachalam temple in Telangana, where the wedding of Rama and Sita is celebrated the day before with a huge kalyanotsavam. In Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu, panakam (jaggery and pepper drink), neer mor (spiced buttermilk) and kosambari are distributed as prasad, and the day falls in the peak of summer, which is what those cooling offerings are for.
In Bihar, the day is marked by shobha yatras — processions with children dressed as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman — and by the traditional akhara processions in which groups carry swords and sticks. Communal tension has historically spiked around Ram Navami processions in some districts, and police deployments in those areas are now routine.

In the order a household actually does them.
Bathe before sunrise and take the sankalp for the vrat. Clean the puja area and set up a picture or idol of Rama, ideally with Sita and Lakshmana.
Begin reading the Ramayana or the Ramcharitmanas through the day, aiming to finish or reach the Bal Kand by midday.
At noon, bathe the idol in panchamrit, dress it, and offer flowers, tulsi, fruit and panakam. Recite the Rama Raksha Stotra or the Ram Chalisa, and rock the cradle if the household has one for the infant Rama.
Offer panakam, neer mor, kosambari and fruit as prasad. Break the fast after the puja with the prasad and a sattvik meal.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.
The birthplace, and the largest congregation of the year at Ram Janmabhoomi. A ritual bath in the Sarayu, continuous Ramayana reading, and a huge shobha yatra through the city.
Shobha yatras with children dressed as Ramayana characters and akhara processions carrying traditional weapons. Security deployments around the processions are now a routine part of the district administration's calendar in several areas.
Bhadrachalam's Sri Rama Navami kalyanotsavam is the region's largest, with the wedding of Rama and Sita celebrated the previous day. Panakam, neer mor and kosambari are distributed as prasad.
Temple-based observance with panakam distribution, reading of the Kamba Ramayanam in Tamil households, and fasting. Not a public holiday in most districts.
Observed with fasting and Ramayana reading, and in Nashik and Panchavati — where Rama lived in exile — with temple celebrations.

With honest budget ranges and a difficulty rating for each.
A picture or idol of Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, on a raised platform with a yellow or orange cloth backdrop and a tulsi plant in front. Yellow and orange are Rama's colours and read correctly for the festival.
Budget: ₹300–₹1,500
A small cradle or swing decorated with flowers and yellow cloth, since Ram Navami is a birth festival. In many homes the cradle is rocked during the midday aarti.
Budget: ₹400–₹1,500
A mango leaf toran with marigold and a small diya, refreshed on the morning of Ram Navami. Mango leaves are the standard auspicious doorway element and suit the festival's tone.
Budget: ₹150–₹500
If children are dressing as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana or Hanuman, lay out costumes the night before and keep a separate bag for props and a bottle of water. Processions in late March get hot quickly.
Budget: ₹500–₹2,500
Including a note on why each dish belongs to this festival.

Ram Navami falls on Friday 27 March 2026, on the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri. The puja is traditionally performed at midday, the hour of Rama's birth.
Rama is believed to have been born at midday on the ninth day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. The puja and the aarti are therefore timed to the noon hour rather than the morning.
Panakam is a South Indian drink of jaggery, black pepper, cardamom and dry ginger in water, served as prasad on Ram Navami. It is a cooling drink, which fits a festival that falls in the hot season.
The Ramayana or Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas is read, often continuously across the preceding day and night. In Tamil households, the Kamba Ramayanam is read instead.
It is a public holiday in several states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, and a restricted or optional holiday in others.
