The national version of a festival is usually a compromise. This is the actual picture.
The birthplace, and the largest congregation of the year at Ram Janmabhoomi. A ritual bath in the Sarayu, continuous Ramayana reading, and a huge shobha yatra through the city.
Shobha yatras with children dressed as Ramayana characters and akhara processions carrying traditional weapons. Security deployments around the processions are now a routine part of the district administration's calendar in several areas.
Bhadrachalam's Sri Rama Navami kalyanotsavam is the region's largest, with the wedding of Rama and Sita celebrated the previous day. Panakam, neer mor and kosambari are distributed as prasad.
Temple-based observance with panakam distribution, reading of the Kamba Ramayanam in Tamil households, and fasting. Not a public holiday in most districts.
Observed with fasting and Ramayana reading, and in Nashik and Panchavati — where Rama lived in exile — with temple celebrations.
