Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in Phalguna, with a night-long jagran
Maha Shivratri is the great night of Shiva, observed on the fourteenth tithi of the dark half of Phalguna. In 2026 it falls on Sunday 15 February. Unlike most Hindu festivals, it is celebrated at night: devotees fast through the day, keep a jagran (an all-night vigil), and perform abhishek of the Shivling every three hours through the night.
There are several accounts of why this night is special. One is that it is the night Shiva and Parvati married. Another is that it is the night Shiva performed the Tandava. A third, and the one most commonly told for the vrat, is that a hunter who spent a night in a bilva tree, dropping leaves onto a Shivling below without knowing it, and fasting without food, attained moksha — which is why the vrat is open to everyone, regardless of intent.
The rituals are simple and highly consistent across regions. A Shivling is bathed in panchamrit — milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar — and then in water, with bel patra (bilva leaves), dhatura, bhang (offered as a leaf in ritual, not consumed), and white flowers. Devotees chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' through the night.
Four Shivratris occur each year, but Maha Shivratri in February or March is the significant one. In Kashmir, Shivratri is celebrated a month later as Herath and is the region's biggest festival for the Kashmiri Pandit community — with a completely separate ritual calendar.

Jai Shri Mahakal! Wishing you and your family a blessed Shivratri.
In the order a household actually does them.
Bathe early, take a sankalp to keep the fast, and visit the temple if possible. Offer water and bel patra at the Shivling.
After sunset, bathe the Shivling in panchamrit — milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar in sequence — then in clean water. Offer bel patra with the smooth side down.
Repeat the abhishek at the second and third quarters of the night, with different offerings. Many devotees keep a pot of water dripping continuously onto the lingam through the night.
The final abhishek is at the fourth prahar, before dawn. Break the fast after sunrise with prasad — usually sabudana khichdi, vrat ki roti or fruits.
Stay awake through the night singing bhajans and chanting. It is the defining act of the festival — the vigil itself is the offering.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.

Celebrated separately as Herath, about a month later, and it is the largest festival of the Kashmiri Pandit community. The ritual involves a full night of prayer, the tying of the veth rope, and a specific set of food offerings including walnuts.
Abhishekam at every Shiva temple through the night, with Thevaram and Thiruvasagam singing. In Karnataka the night is observed with Ishta Linga worship, particularly among the Lingayat community.
Observed as Shivratri with abhishek and night-long worship; in Bengal, Tarakeswar draws a large pilgrimage. Odisha observes it with the traditional fast and bel patra offering.
Srisailam and Kalahasti draw huge crowds. Devotees keep the vrat and perform abhishek at home as well, and the following day is often a local holiday.

A tray with the panchamrit in five small bowls, a jug of clean water, bel patra, dhatura and white flowers, and a bell. Arranging it before sunset makes the four-time nighttime abhishek actually happen rather than being skipped.
Budget: ₹200–₹600
A three-leaf bel sprig beside white flowers — kaner, dhatura or jasmine — in a single brass pot. White is Shiva's colour; reds should be kept to a minimum on this day.
Budget: ₹150–₹500
A floor seating arrangement with mattresses and blankets, oil lamps placed at the four corners, and a bell within reach. If you are keeping an all-night vigil, warmth matters more than aesthetics.
Budget: ₹0–₹500
A clay pot with a tiny hole suspended above the Shivling, so water drips continuously through the night — a common home version of the abhishek when the whole family is asleep.
Budget: ₹150–₹400
Including a note on why each dish belongs to this festival.

Maha Shivratri falls on Sunday 15 February 2026, on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in Phalguna.
The jagran, or all-night vigil, is itself the offering. Devotees stay awake chanting and performing abhishek at each of the four prahars of the night, based on the belief that Shiva is especially present on this night.
Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar), then water; bel patra with the smooth side down; dhatura; white flowers; akhand rice; and bhang leaves as an offering. Bhang is offered ritually but consumption is a separate matter with its own legal status by state.
Yes. The vrat is considered open to anyone, based on the story of the hunter who gained merit through an unintentional fast and vigil. It is not restricted by caste or gender.
Maha Shivratri is the national observance in February or March. Herath is the Kashmiri Pandit celebration of Shivratri, which falls about a month later and has a distinct ritual form and food tradition.
