7 Poush in the Nanakshahi calendar, usually late December or early January
Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, also called Prakash Parva, marks the birth of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last human Sikh Guru, in 1666 at Patna Sahib. In 2026 it falls in late December. It is a public holiday in Punjab and several other states.
Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699, compiled the Dasam Granth, and declared the Guru Granth Sahib to be the eternal Guru after him — which is why there have been no human Gurus since. He also founded the Panj Pyare tradition of the five beloved ones.
The observance follows the standard Gurpurab pattern: an akhand path beginning two days earlier, kirtan, prabhat pheri or nagar kirtan through the streets, and langar for everyone. Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar, his birthplace, sees the largest gathering, and the Anandpur Sahib and Hazur Sahib gurdwaras are also major centres.
Because it falls in late December, the observance often coincides with the Christmas period, and in Patna and Punjab the two are marked side by side. The nagar kirtan in Patna is one of the largest Sikh processions in eastern India.
