Specific practices rather than a general mood.
The national version of a festival is usually a compromise. This is the actual picture.
The strongest observance, with strict nirjala fasting, group puja in the neighbourhood, sargi from the mother-in-law, and moonrise breaking the fast. In Punjab, Haryana and Himachal the karwa is a clay pot filled with wheat, tied to the wheat-sowing season.
Increasingly widely observed in urban areas, though it was not a traditional Gujarati or Maharashtrian festival. The mechanics follow the North Indian form.
Traditionally not observed, but now kept by many women in metropolitan cities, particularly in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai. Panchang dates for the fast are published by local sources.
Observed mainly by North Indian communities. Bengal has its own nearby fasting traditions that are unrelated to Karwa Chauth.
