In the order a household actually does it, including what to set up beforehand.
A thali with roli or sandalwood paste, akshat (rice), a small diya, betel leaves, areca nut, a coconut, and sweets. Add a glass of water or a kalash for the aarti.
The sister applies the tilak vertically on the brother's forehead, scatters akshat, performs aarti with the diya, and then applies a little to the brother's ears. The tilak is done facing east where possible.
Offer the brother sweets by hand, then touch his feet. The brother gives a gift — traditionally cash in an envelope, along with a promise of support.
A full meal cooked for the occasion, which the brother and sister eat together. In Maharashtra and Bengal this meal is the social centre of the day.
The checklist tool builds the full item list for this puja from the same data as the steps above, and saves your ticks on your own device so you can reopen it in the market.
Ritual order genuinely varies. Where it does, this is the difference.
Bhai Dooj with the tilak, aarti and an exchange of sweets and gifts. Families with married sisters travel to be together, and the brother's gift is usually an envelope.
Celebrated as Bhai Phonta. The sister uses a specific plate with sandalwood paste, dhoop, sweets, and a betel-leaf fan, and draws a chandan mark while fanning the brother. The ritual items differ from the Hindi-belt version.
Observed as Bhau Beej, with a tilak of sandalwood, kumkum and rice, followed by a full meal cooked by the sister. The ceremony is often extended to cousins and close male friends.
Overlaps with Yamuna Chhath, observed on the Yamuna's banks where sisters pray for their brothers. This is the more religiously formal version of the day in the region.
Celebrated as Bhai Tika with a seven-coloured tika and a garland of makhamali flowers, on a date that frequently differs from the Hindi-belt Bhai Dooj.
Bhai Dooj closes the Gujarati new year week, and the brother typically visits his sister's home and is given a full meal along with the tilak.
