The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Durga Puja follows Shukla Paksha of Ashwin, from Maha Sasthi to Vijaya Dashami. The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.
Counting down to Durga Puja 2026
Your local time · Friday 16 October 2026
Durga Puja 2026 runs across five days in October, from Maha Sasthi on 16 October through Vijaya Dashami on 20 October, aligning with Dussehra. The dates follow Ashwin Shukla Paksha and can shift by a day with the lunar calendar.
They are the same nine days in the Hindu calendar, observed differently. Durga Puja in Bengal is a five-day public festival with pandals, bhog and idol immersion. Navratri elsewhere is largely a period of fasting, home worship and, in Gujarat, garba.
On Vijaya Dashami, married women apply vermilion to the goddess and then to each other, and offer sweets, before the idol is taken for immersion. It is the emotional centre of the festival's final day.
Khichuri with labra, served as prasad at pandals on Ashtami and Navami to everyone who queues. It is cooked in very large quantities and is deliberately simple, loose and well spiced.
