First day (Pratipada) of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra
Gudi Padwa is the Marathi and Konkani new year, celebrated on the first day of Chaitra. In 2026 it falls on 19 March, the same day as Chaitra Navratri's Ghatasthapana and the Gujarati new year. The name comes from gudi, the decorated flag-like arrangement hoisted outside the house, and padwa, the first day of a lunar fortnight.
The gudi is a bamboo stick topped with a bright silk cloth, neem and mango leaves, a garland of flowers and an upturned silver or copper pot. It is hoisted at a window or above the door on the morning of the festival and traditionally taken down after the day. It is believed to invite prosperity and to mark Brahma's creation of the world on this day.
The day is a major occasion for beginning things in Maharashtra — new businesses, new vehicles, new account books, house-warmings. The traditional prasad is a mixture of neem leaves, jaggery and cumin, which is eaten first thing and is deliberately bitter-sweet: a reminder that the year will hold both.
In Karnataka and parts of Andhra the same day is celebrated as Ugadi or Samvatsaradi, with the Ugadi pachadi combining six tastes, and the panchanga shravanam — the public reading of the year's almanac.

In the order a household actually does them.
Tie a bright silk cloth to a bamboo stick, cover it with neem and mango leaves and a flower garland, and top it with an upturned silver or copper pot. Fix it at a window or door frame, facing outward.
Mix crushed neem flowers or leaves with jaggery and cumin, and eat a spoonful first thing. The prasad combines all tastes deliberately.
Light a diya before the gudi and draw a rangoli at the entrance with the gudi motif in the centre.
Open new account books, do a vehicle puja, or begin a new venture. The day is considered auspicious for the first entry of the year.

Gudi Padwa falls on 19 March 2026, the first day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha.
A gudi is a bamboo stick wrapped in a bright silk cloth, decorated with neem and mango leaves and a flower garland, and topped with an upturned silver or copper pot. It is hoisted at a window or door on Gudi Padwa.
The prasad deliberately combines bitter neem with sweet jaggery and cumin. It is a reminder at the start of the year that it will contain both bitter and sweet experiences, and it is also considered good for health at the change of season.
They fall on the same day and both are new year celebrations, but the rituals differ. Gudi Padwa is the Marathi and Konkani observance with the gudi; Ugadi is the Kannada, Telugu and Konkani observance with the Ugadi pachadi and panchanga shravanam.
