Gudi Padwa 2026
Gudi Padwa follows First day (Pratipada) of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra. It runs for about 1 day nationally.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
Gudi Padwa proper — the gudi hoisted at the window, neem-jaggery prasad, new account books, and processions in Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur and Nashik. In Goa it is celebrated as Samvatsar Padvo.
The same date is Ugadi or Samvatsaradi, celebrated with the Ugadi pachadi and the public reading of the new year's panchanga. In Karnataka it is the Samvatsaradi festival.
Celebrated as the Gujarati new year on the same day, with new account books and a home puja, though the Gujarati year change is more closely tied to Diwali in most communities.
