The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Guru Purnima follows Ashadha Purnima (full moon of the Hindu month of Ashadha). The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Guru Purnima 2026
Guru Purnima falls on 28 July 2026, on Ashadha Purnima.
It honours Ved Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedas, Mahabharata and Puranas. Buddhists mark the same full moon as the day the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and Jains mark Mahavira's first initiation.
It is named after Ved Vyasa, who is credited with compiling the four Vedas, the eighteen Puranas and the Mahabharata. Teachers and gurus are honoured on his day.
The Buddhist observance on the same full moon, marking the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath. In Theravada traditions it begins the vassa, the three-month rains retreat for monks.
