Akshaya Tritiya
The wood for the three chariots is consecrated and construction begins, taking about two months, with the specified dimensions and cloth layers for each chariot.
Rath Yatra day
The deities are brought out and placed on the chariots in the early afternoon, the king sweeps the platforms, and the chariots are pulled to the Gundicha temple over the afternoon and evening.
Days 2–8
The deities stay at the Gundicha temple, with chappan bhog offered daily. Devotees visit for darshan.
Bahuda Yatra
The deities are pulled back in the reverse order, stopping at the Mausi Maa temple for poda pitha, and return to the main temple.
Suna Besha
The deities are dressed in elaborate gold ornaments on the chariots, which is the most photographed moment after the main procession.

Ritual order genuinely varies. Where it does, this is the difference.
The origin. Three chariots on the Bada Danda, the Gajapati king performing Chhera Pahara, and the deities residing at the Gundicha temple for eight days. The scale is second only to the Kumbh among Indian religious gatherings.
Rath Yatra is widely observed, with the Mahesh Rath Yatra in Serampore being the second oldest in India after Puri. Small chariots are pulled in neighbourhoods across both states.
ISKCON holds Rath Yatra processions on the same date in London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Johannesburg and dozens of other cities, which has given the festival an international footprint unusual among Indian festivals.
ISKCON temples and Odia associations hold their own chariot processions, and Jagannath temples in Delhi and Vrindavan see large congregations on the day.
