Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu, observed on the day after Dev Uthani Ekadashi, when Vishnu is believed to wake from his four-month sleep. In 2026 it falls in late November.
The tulsi plant is decorated as a bride, with a sugarcane stalk and an amla branch as the groom, or with a Shaligram stone as Vishnu. A full wedding ritual is performed — mandap, haldi, baraat if the family chooses, kanyadaan, and a feast — and the plant is then carried to the home's tulsi vrindavan. It is the only Hindu ritual in which a plant is formally married.
This is the day that opens the Hindu wedding season. Dev Uthani Ekadashi ends the four-month period (Chaturmas) in which weddings and most auspicious ceremonies are avoided, so Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial first wedding of the year — after which actual weddings resume in earnest.
The marriage also marks the transition into the cooler season when tulsi is planted and tended. In Tamil Nadu, the equivalent is Tulsi Kalyanam with a similar ritual, and in Maharashtra and Gujarat the day is observed with a full home ceremony, sweets and a feast.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
A full household ceremony with the wedding ritual, a feast, and the tulsi decorated as a bride. In Maharashtra the day marks the opening of the wedding season, and marriage halls begin to fill from Tulsi Vivah.
Observed as Tulsi Kalyanam with a similar ritual, held in temples and at home. In many temples the tulsi marriage is conducted with a full kanyadaan and a procession.
The tulsi is decorated and the marriage performed at home, with lamps around the vrindavan in the evening. The day is closely tied to the end of Chaturmas and the resumption of weddings.
Observed as Tulsi Vivah with the household marriage ritual, and in Bengal it follows Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which itself is a major fasting day.
