Panchami of Shukla Paksha in Magha
Vasant Panchami marks the start of spring and is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music and speech. In 2026 it falls on 23 January. It is the day on which children in many parts of India are formally introduced to letters, and in Bengal and Odisha it is Saraswati Puja, with schools and colleges hosting their own pujas.
The colour of the day is yellow, standing for the mustard fields in bloom and for the ripening of the harvest. Yellow clothes, yellow sweets and yellow flowers are the standard offering, and in North India it is traditional not to wear white on this day.
For students, Vasant Panchami is the biggest day of the academic calendar after results — Bengal's Saraswati Puja is treated almost like a school festival, with students organising the puja, distributing khichdi and prasad, and wearing yellow for the day. In Punjab and Haryana, kite flying is common. In Bihar and UP, Vidyarambham ceremonies for young children are held at home and at temples.

In the order a household actually does them.
Bathe and set up a white or yellow cloth for Saraswati, offer white and yellow flowers, yellow rice, boondi laddoo, and the instruments or books of the household. Saraswati's vahan is the swan or peacock.
For a young child, write the first letters on a plate of rice with a finger or a gold ring, holding the child's hand. In some families this is done at a temple.
Books, pens, instruments and tools are placed at the puja and not used on this day. Learning resumes the next day with a fresh start.
In Bengal, khichdi bhog is cooked and distributed; the puja itself is usually a school or community event.

Vasant Panchami falls on 23 January 2026, on the Panchami of Magha Shukla Paksha.
Yellow represents the mustard fields in bloom and the ripening harvest that comes with spring. It is also Saraswati's colour in this context, and white is generally avoided on the day.
It is the ceremony of introducing a young child to writing. Letters are traced in a plate of rice with a finger or a gold ring, usually on Vasant Panchami or Vijayadashami.
Books, pens, instruments and tools are placed at the feet of Saraswati for the day and left unused. They are picked up again the next day, marking a fresh start to learning.
