Bathe and set up a white or yellow cloth for Saraswati, offer white and yellow flowers, yellow rice, boondi laddoo, and the instruments or books of the household. Saraswati's vahan is the swan or peacock.
For a young child, write the first letters on a plate of rice with a finger or a gold ring, holding the child's hand. In some families this is done at a temple.
Books, pens, instruments and tools are placed at the puja and not used on this day. Learning resumes the next day with a fresh start.
In Bengal, khichdi bhog is cooked and distributed; the puja itself is usually a school or community event.
