Vasant Panchami marks the start of spring and is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music and speech. In 2026 it falls on 23 January. It is the day on which children in many parts of India are formally introduced to letters, and in Bengal and Odisha it is Saraswati Puja, with schools and colleges hosting their own pujas.
The colour of the day is yellow, standing for the mustard fields in bloom and for the ripening of the harvest. Yellow clothes, yellow sweets and yellow flowers are the standard offering, and in North India it is traditional not to wear white on this day.
For students, Vasant Panchami is the biggest day of the academic calendar after results — Bengal's Saraswati Puja is treated almost like a school festival, with students organising the puja, distributing khichdi and prasad, and wearing yellow for the day. In Punjab and Haryana, kite flying is common. In Bihar and UP, Vidyarambham ceremonies for young children are held at home and at temples.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
Saraswati Puja, one of the largest school and college festivals in Bengal. Students organise the puja, wear yellow, and distribute khichdi bhog. Idols are taken for immersion in the evening.
Celebrated as Basant, with kite flying, yellow clothing, and in Sikh tradition as the Basant season and raga. Fairs are held in some districts.
Vidyarambham ceremonies for young children at home and at temples, with puja to Saraswati and the placing of books and pens at the idol.
Observed with Saraswati puja and yellow clothing; children's first writing ceremonies are common, and it is considered an auspicious day to start study.
