10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the day after the Day of Arafah
Eid al-Adha, called Bakrid in India, falls on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj pilgrimage. In 2026 it is expected around 27 May. It commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, and the substitution of a ram at the last moment.
The central practice is qurbani — the ritual sacrifice of an animal, which must be divided into three parts: one for the household, one for relatives and neighbours, and one for the poor. The distribution to the poor is obligatory rather than optional, and the obligation falls only on those who can afford it.
In India, the sacrifice is regulated by municipal law: most states permit only designated locations, ban slaughter in public places, and require animals to be transported and treated according to animal welfare rules. Several states have restrictions or bans on cattle slaughter, which has made the practice legally complex and variable across the country.
The day is otherwise a large family festival — the Eid namaz, visits to relatives, and heavy cooking, with the meat distributed across the neighbourhood by the evening. Because it falls during the Hajj, it is also the day when families with members on pilgrimage are especially attentive to news from Mecca.

In the order a household actually does them.
Bathe and wear clean clothes, and attend the Eidgah congregation. Do not eat before the prayer on Eid al-Adha, unlike Eid al-Fitr.
Performed after the Eid prayer and the khutbah, over the three days of Eid. It must be done at a licensed location in most Indian states, with the animal treated humanely and the meat divided into three.
Distribute one share to the poor and one to relatives and neighbours, keeping one for the household. The distribution should be completed over the three days.
Biryani or korma is the standard Eid al-Adha meal in most Indian households, usually served to guests across all three days.

Large congregations and widespread meat distribution, with the city's Bohri community observing a distinct set of Eid al-Adha traditions including the Bohri thaal meal.
Malabar Muslim households observe the day with their own coastal cooking, and Kerala's Muslim community distributes meat widely across the neighbourhood.
Kolkata and Assam's Muslim communities observe Eid al-Adha with local cooking traditions, and in West Bengal the legal status of cattle sacrifice has been the subject of sustained political and legal dispute.

Sharing qurbani meat is the festival's obligation, and giving a biryani kit with rice, spices and ghee to a household that received meat is the natural pairing.
Suits: neighbours, relatives, staff, community
Money for children remains the standard gift on both Eids, and on Eid al-Adha it is often given alongside the meat distribution.
Suits: child, niece, nephew
Donating the cost of a qurbani to a charity that distributes meat to the poor is a well-established route in India and covers those who cannot perform the sacrifice themselves.

Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected around 27 May, on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah. The date depends on the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon and is announced locally.
Bakri means goat, and the festival's central practice is the sacrifice of a goat, sheep, cow, camel or buffalo. Bakrid is the common Indian name, alongside Badi Eid and Qurbani Eid.
It is regulated. Most states permit ritual slaughter only at designated locations, ban it in public places, and require humane treatment and transport. Several states restrict or ban cattle slaughter. Rules differ substantially by state, and TyoharHub does not provide state-specific legal guidance.
Traditionally into three shares: one for the household, one for relatives and neighbours, and one for the poor. The share for the poor is the obligation, not the household's own.
