1 Shawwal, the day after the sighting of the Shawwal moon
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal. In 2026 it is expected around 20 March, following the sighting of the Shawwal moon. In India it is often called Meethi Eid or Chhoti Eid, distinguishing it from Eid al-Adha, and sweets are central to the day.
The day begins with a bath, new clothes and the Eid prayer (Eid namaz), held in a mosque or an open ground (Eidgah) in a large congregation. Before the prayer, zakat al-Fitr must be given — a fixed quantity of food or its value per household member — which is the mechanism that ensures the poorest can celebrate too.
The rest of the day is visiting: family, neighbours, and in many places friends of other faiths, with sheer khurma, sewaiyan and other sweets served at every house. The greeting is 'Eid Mubarak'. In India the day is also a major food occasion, and the cooking traditions vary sharply by city — Hyderabadi sheer khurma, Lucknowi kebabs and biryani, and Kerala's Malabar dishes.
Eid al-Fitr is one of the few Indian festivals with a strong tradition of interfaith visiting; in cities such as Delhi, Hyderabad and Lucknow, it is normal for neighbours of other religions to be invited for the meal, and the day is a public holiday across India.

In the order a household actually does them.
Eat something sweet before leaving for the prayer — dates are traditional. Bathe, wear clean or new clothes, and apply itr.
Give before the Eid prayer. Traditionally a fixed measure of staple food, but commonly given as its cash equivalent. It is per person, including children.
Attend the congregation at an Eidgah or mosque. The prayer is followed by the khutbah, and in most Indian congregations the khutbah is after the prayer rather than before.
Recite the takbir on the way to the prayer, and take a different route home where possible — a sunnah that is followed in many households.
Sheer khurma is served first, followed by a full meal. Visiting continues through the day and into the evening, and dinner is often at a relative's house.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.
Sheer khurma is at its most elaborate here, with a heavier date and nut component, and the Old City's Eid markets around Charminar are among the largest in India.
Large Eidgah congregations, with Delhi's Jama Masjid area and Lucknow's old city being the biggest. Lucknow's Awadhi cooking makes the Eid meal distinct from Delhi's.
Mohammed Ali Road and Bhendi Bazaar host the city's biggest Eid markets, with a mix of Bohri, Konkani Muslim and North Indian food traditions.
Malabar Eid cooking centres on pathiri, kanji and coastal dishes, and Kerala's Muslims observe the day with a distinct culinary tradition rather than the North Indian sweet-led form.
Kolkata's Park Circus and Metiabruz areas run big Eid congregations and markets, and Bengali Muslim households serve their own sweets alongside the standard sewaiyan.

Eidi is the traditional Eid gift, and money in a proper envelope is what the custom actually calls for.

New clothes on Eid are close to obligatory, and the outfit is the day's most photographed purchase.
Suits: wife, husband, child, self
Itr is applied before the Eid prayer and is the traditional Eid fragrance gift; a set with a prayer mat completes it.
Suits: parents, husband, wife, friends
Eid is structured around zakat, so a donation made in a relative's name is one of the most appropriate gifts of the day.

Eid al-Fitr 2026 is expected around 20 March, the day after the Shawwal moon is sighted. Because the date depends on the actual sighting, it may fall a day earlier or later, and it is announced locally rather than published in advance.
A fixed amount — traditionally a measure of staple food, commonly given as its cash value — that must be given by every household member before the Eid prayer. Its purpose is to ensure that poorer households can also celebrate.
Meethi means sweet, and the day is dominated by sweet dishes — sheer khurma, sewaiyan and other mithai. It is distinguished from Eid al-Adha, which is the meat-centred festival.
Eidi is the money or gift given to children on Eid al-Fitr, traditionally by elders during the day's visits. There is no fixed amount, and it is given in cash or in a decorated envelope.
In much of urban India, yes — Eid visiting across communities is a long-standing practice, particularly in Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Mumbai, and neighbours and colleagues of other faiths are commonly invited for the meal.
