Useful because the wrong colour is the only way to look out of place at a festival, and the right one is genuinely easy.
Those are the colours the festival itself uses — diya flame, kumkum, marigold, turmeric, sindoor. You do not have to wear them, but if you are unsure, wearing one of them reads as deliberate rather than accidental.
A single saturated piece against white, ivory or charcoal photographs far better in the warm light of diyas and fairy lights than four bright colours competing.
Small prints and thin stripes turn to a grey shimmer in low light and under a phone flash. Solid colour, texture and embroidery read much better.
Most of the festival season is cold in North India and humid in the South. A shawl or dupatta you can take off solves both without changing the outfit.
The people who look best in festival pictures are the ones who could sit on the floor, bend down to light a diya and stand through an aarti. Anything you have to hold in place will show.
