Eid al-Adha 2026
Eid al-Adha follows 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the day after the Day of Arafah. It runs for about 3 days in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The largest Eid al-Adha observance in India. Mutton biryani and haleem dominate the three days, and the Old City markets are at their busiest of the year.
Eidgah congregations in the morning and heavy distribution of meat across neighbourhoods, with non-Muslim neighbours commonly receiving a share. Awadhi biryani and kebabs are standard in Lucknow.
Large congregations and widespread meat distribution, with the city's Bohri community observing a distinct set of Eid al-Adha traditions including the Bohri thaal meal.
Malabar Muslim households observe the day with their own coastal cooking, and Kerala's Muslim community distributes meat widely across the neighbourhood.
Kolkata and Assam's Muslim communities observe Eid al-Adha with local cooking traditions, and in West Bengal the legal status of cattle sacrifice has been the subject of sustained political and legal dispute.
