Step-by-step Ganesh Chaturthi puja vidhi for 2026 — what to prepare, the order of the ritual, and what to do when you are doing it at home for the first time.

Install the idol at an auspicious muhurat, usually on the first day. Place it on a clean platform facing east or north, on a red cloth, with a kalash beside it.
Offer durva grass (twenty-one blades), red hibiscus, modak, coconut, and akshat. Apply kumkum and sandalwood paste to the idol. Light a ghee diya and dhoop.
Recite the Ganesh Atharvashirsha or at minimum the Ganpati aarti morning and evening. Bell, conch and aarti thali with camphor.
On the final day, offer a last aarti, then immerse the idol. Say 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya'. If you are using a clay idol, home immersion in a bucket is permitted and far better for the water body than a large-scale immersion.

Ritual order genuinely varies. Where it does, this is the difference.
The festival's heartland. Home Ganpatis for 1.5, 5, 7 or 10 days, hundreds of neighbourhood mandals with large idols, daily aarti, and Anant Chaturdashi immersion. Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja and Dagdusheth Halwai in Pune are the most visited pandals in the country.
Observed as Vinayaka Chaturthi with a home puja, kolukattai as the offering, and Vinayagar Agaval recitation. The public pandal culture is minimal compared with Maharashtra.
Largely a domestic festival with home idols and modak or kudumulu offerings. Hyderabad and Bengaluru now have growing community celebrations.
Celebrated as Chavath, with the Gauri puja and a distinct Saraswat ritual sequence, plus the traditional matoli — an arrangement of wild fruits and vegetables suspended above the idol.
Ganesh Chaturthi is observed mainly at home and at community pandals in markets, with a shorter duration than in Maharashtra. It is not a regional holiday in the same way.
