Sized for an actual doorway, courtyard or floor rather than for a photograph.
A raised wooden or thermocol-free platform (bamboo or plywood) draped in a bright fabric, with a fabric backdrop and two banana stems at the sides. Keep the idol at eye level — a low platform is both harder to see and harder to do aarti at.
Typical spend: ₹1,000–₹10,000
Decorate with fresh marigold, hibiscus and durva grass rather than thermocol and foam, and use cloth or paper for the backdrop. Everything in a flower mandap can go into a compost bin on day ten.
Typical spend: ₹500–₹3,000
A small brass tray with twenty-one blades of durva grass, two red hibiscus and a modak, arranged fresh each morning. It takes two minutes and makes the daily puja photograph well.
Typical spend: ₹0–₹200
A tall brass or steel lamp stand with a full set of aarti diyas beside the idol, plus a bell and a conch. Keeping the aarti items on their own stand avoids knocking the idol over twice a day.
Typical spend: ₹400–₹2,000
Most rangoli failures are symmetry failures. Draw the outer circle with a compass or a plate, then divide it into equal wedges with chalk. You can pour colour over the chalk and it disappears.
Dry rice flour holds an edge far better than wet powder and is what the traditional doorway versions are drawn with. Keep a small bowl separate for touch-ups.
Layers added from the middle keep the shape honest. Working inwards tends to leave you compressing the last ring to fit, which is what makes a rangoli look rushed.
A lightly damp floor holds powder. A wet one makes it bleed. One pass with a damp cloth on a stone floor is enough; back off completely on tile with a glossy finish.
