Specific practices rather than a general mood.
The national version of a festival is usually a compromise. This is the actual picture.
The spiritual home of Holi. Lathmar Holi at Barsana runs days before the main festival, with women striking men with sticks in a re-enactment of Radha's play; Nandgaon replies the next day. Phoolon Wali Holi at Banke Bihari temple and Widow's Holi at Vrindavan are newer, well-documented additions.
Holika Dahan on the eve, then a loud water-and-colour Holi the next morning. Neighbourhood colonies often pool resources for the bonfire.
Celebrated as Dol Purnima or Dola Purnima — a Radha-Krishna swing festival with processions and abir applied gently, rather than the street colour play of the north.
Holi is followed immediately by Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib, the day after, where Nihang Sikhs perform gatka and display horsemanship. It is a martial and cultural festival, not a colour festival.
Celebrated as Phakuwa or Doul Utsav, centred on Barpeta Satra, where the festival lasts several days with devotional song and dance rather than colour play.
Holi is muted in much of the south; Karnataka's coastal and northern districts observe it as Kamanna Habba or Holi more visibly than Tamil Nadu does.
