Independence Day is observed on 15 August, marking India's independence from British rule in 1947. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday. It is a national holiday across India.
The central observance is the Prime Minister's address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi, following the hoisting of the national flag. The speech reviews the government's record and sets out priorities for the year, and it is broadcast nationally.
Unlike Republic Day, which is a parade, Independence Day is largely a flag-hoisting day at the local level. Schools, colleges, offices, housing societies and government institutions all hold ceremonies in the morning, with the flag hoisting, the national anthem, the Prime Minister's speech either live or recorded, and the distribution of sweets. In schools, the day is marked with cultural programmes, patriotic songs and, in many places, a performance by children dressed as freedom fighters.
The separation from Partition is part of the day's context. Independence in 1947 came with the partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan, and the resulting violence and displacement killed and uprooted millions. Both countries observe their independence days a day apart — Pakistan on 14 August and India on 15 August — and the day is a public holiday in both.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
The Prime Minister's flag hoisting and address from the Red Fort, broadcast nationally. It is the day's central national observance.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades across the state, with significant public attendance in Srinagar and Jammu, and the day is observed as a public event.
Kite flying is traditional in Gujarat around the monsoon, and the day sees rooftop kite flying in Ahmedabad and Surat alongside the flag-hoisting ceremonies.
Both states share the Partition context of 1947, and the day is observed with the standard ceremonies plus, in some districts, Partition remembrance events.
Flag-hoisting ceremonies at schools, colleges and offices, with cultural programmes, and state-level events in Chennai, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram.
This is where the majority of Indians actually experience the day — a morning flag hoisting, the anthem, a cultural programme, and sweets. It is the most universally observed form of the festival.
