The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Independence Day follows 15 August, the day India became independent in 1947. The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Independence Day 2026
Independence Day is on 15 August every year, and in 2026 it falls on a Saturday. It is a national holiday.
The flag is hoisted at the Red Fort in the morning and the address typically begins around 7:30 am IST. Timings can shift slightly year to year, and the address is broadcast live nationally.
The partition of British India created two states. Pakistan observes Independence Day on 14 August and India on 15 August, reflecting the dates on which power was transferred in each.
Use a flag made of handspun or handwoven material in the prescribed proportions, hoist at sunrise and lower before sunset, ensure it never touches the ground, and do not display it below any other item or use it as part of a costume. The full flag code is published by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
