The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Lohri follows The night before Makar Sankranti, at the end of the month of Paush. The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Lohri 2026
Lohri falls on 13 January 2026, the night before Makar Sankranti.
It marks the end of the winter solstice period and the start of longer days, and traditionally the end of the harvest season and the financial year in Punjab. The bonfire and the offering of til, gur and rewri into it are the central ritual.
Children go door to door singing traditional Lohri songs and collecting sweets, gajak and money — a custom similar to carol singing or trick-or-treating.
Til (sesame) and gur (jaggery) are winter foods and part of the new harvest. Offering them to the fire is a thanksgiving for the harvest and a request for a good year ahead.
