Thai 1 to Thai 4 in the Tamil solar calendar, from 14 or 15 January
Pongal is the Tamil harvest festival, running four days from the last day of the Tamil month of Margazhi into Thai. It coincides with Makar Sankranti but is a distinct festival with its own rituals. In 2026 Thai Pongal, the main day, is on 14 January and the four days run 13–16 January.
The word pongal means 'to boil over', and the central ritual is cooking the first rice of the new harvest with milk and jaggery in a new clay pot until it boils over. The overflow is the auspicious sign — the louder the pot boils over, the better the year is considered. The whole family watches for it, and shouts 'Pongalo Pongal'.
The four days each have a distinct character. Bhogi, the eve, involves a bonfire of old and unwanted household items. Thai Pongal is the main day, with the pot boiling over, sugarcane, turmeric and the sun worshipped. Mattu Pongal is the day for cattle — they are washed, their horns painted, garlands and bells put on them, and they are fed the pongal before anyone else. Kaanum Pongal is the day for family visits, with the leftovers laid out on a turmeric leaf for birds.
In the cities, Pongal is largely a food festival — Ven Pongal, sarkkarai pongal and Sakkarai Pongal are made in every Tamil household, and the day is a public holiday across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of Sri Lanka.

Wishing you a very Happy Pongal. May your pot always boil over with good fortune.
Happy Thai Pongal! May the sun bless your home with health and prosperity.
Wishing you and your family a blessed Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal ahead.
In the order a household actually does them.
Bhogi
Clean the house and burn old items in the Bhogi bonfire. Draw the kolam. In the evening, the house is ready for the festival.
Thai Pongal
Cook rice, moong dal, milk and jaggery in a new clay pot on a hearth of bricks, decorated with turmeric and kolam. When it boils over, shout 'Pongalo Pongal'. Offer the first serving to the sun, then to the family.
Mattu Pongal
Bathe the cattle, apply turmeric and kumkum, paint their horns, and garland them with bells. Feed them pongal first. In many villages, a cattle race or cattle decoration competition is held.
Kaanum Pongal
Visit relatives and share a meal. Lay the leftover pongal, coloured rice and curd rice on a turmeric leaf in the courtyard for birds — a ritual of giving to other living things.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.

Observed as a public holiday with the same rituals, and in Sri Lanka as Thai Pongal, one of the major Tamil festivals on the island.
The same solar date is observed as Suggi in Karnataka and Sankranti in Andhra, with a three-day structure of Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma, and similar cattle decoration on the third day.
Thai Pongal is a public holiday in Malaysia and an official festival in Singapore and Mauritius, celebrated with the pot ritual and kolam in Tamil communities.
Gift categories, honestly described — not a list of sponsored products.
The pongal pot is replaced every year in many households, and a decorated pot with a brick hearth is exactly what the ritual requires.
Suits: family, mother, new home
New clothes on Pongal are standard, and giving clothes to household staff and workers is a genuine part of the festival.
Suits: wife, mother, family, staff
Mattu Pongal is the day for cattle, so feed, garlands and cattle-care items are the most on-theme gift of the four days.

A rice flour kolam with red earth border, refreshed daily through the four days. Rice flour kolam also feeds ants and small birds, which is part of the intent rather than an accident.
Budget: ₹0–₹100
Two sugarcane stalks tied with turmeric plants and a marigold garland on either side of the entrance. Both are harvest crops, so the decoration is the harvest itself.
Budget: ₹200–₹600
A fresh clay pot on a hearth of three or five bricks, coloured with kolam and decorated with turmeric. Place it outdoors or in a courtyard where the boil-over can happen safely.
Budget: ₹300–₹800
Turmeric, kumkum, a garland, bells and non-toxic colour for the horns for Mattu Pongal. Use food-grade colour only — anything solvent-based on a cow's horns is a genuine hazard.
Budget: ₹200–₹600

Thai Pongal, the main day, falls on 14 January 2026, with the four days running 13–16 January: Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal.
The boiling over of the pot is the central auspicious sign of abundance. The ritual is deliberately about overflow, and families watch for it and shout 'Pongalo Pongal' when it happens.
The third day of Pongal, dedicated to cattle. The animals are bathed, decorated with turmeric, kumkum, painted horns and bells, and fed pongal before the family eats.
The eve of Pongal, when old and unwanted household items are burned in a bonfire — a ritual discarding of the past before the harvest festival begins.
They fall on the same solar date and share a harvest origin, but the festivals are distinct. Pongal runs four days with kolam, the boiling pot, cattle worship and family visits, while Makar Sankranti has its own rituals in other states.
