Pongal 2026
Pongal follows Thai 1 to Thai 4 in the Tamil solar calendar, from 14 or 15 January. It runs for about 4 days in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The full four-day festival: Bhogi bonfire, Thai Pongal with the boiling pot, Mattu Pongal for cattle, and Kaanum Pongal for family visits. A public holiday across the state.
Observed as a public holiday with the same rituals, and in Sri Lanka as Thai Pongal, one of the major Tamil festivals on the island.
The same solar date is observed as Suggi in Karnataka and Sankranti in Andhra, with a three-day structure of Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma, and similar cattle decoration on the third day.
Thai Pongal is a public holiday in Malaysia and an official festival in Singapore and Mauritius, celebrated with the pot ritual and kolam in Tamil communities.
