Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam, following the Shravana nakshatra
Onam is Kerala's largest festival, a ten-day harvest celebration that culminates on Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam. In 2026 Thiruvonam falls in late August. It is the one major Indian festival observed across every religion in a state — Hindu, Muslim and Christian households in Kerala all celebrate Onam.
The festival commemorates the homecoming of Mahabali, the legendary king of Kerala whose reign was so prosperous and just that the gods grew uneasy and sent Vamana to end it. Vamana granted Mahabali the boon of returning to visit his people once a year, and Onam is that annual visit. Unlike most Indian festivals, it involves no fasting, no idol worship and no fire — it is entirely about food, flowers and community.
The pookalam is the festival's visual signature: a circular floral carpet laid in the courtyard, grown in complexity over the ten days, with a new layer added each day. The Onasadya, the elaborate vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf on Thiruvonam, has a rigid order of dishes, and is genuinely one of the largest meals in the Indian culinary tradition. Snake boat races (vallam kali) at Aranmula and Nehru Trophy, and the Pulikali tiger dance, are the festival's public spectacles.
Onam is also the state's biggest retail season, and Kerala's government runs Onam markets and consumer fairs to cap prices on essential goods during the period.

Onam Ashamsakal! May this Onam bring you the prosperity of Mahabali's reign.
Wishing you a very Happy Onam. May your home be full of flowers and food.
May this Thiruvonam bring health, wealth and happiness to your family. Happy Onam!
Onam Ashamsakal! The pookalam is ready and the sadya is on the leaf.
In the order a household actually does them.
Atham (day 1)
Lay the first ring of the pookalam at the entrance with a simple circle of yellow flowers. It grows by a layer each day.
Days 1–9
Add flowers daily, and prepare for the Thiruvonam feast by gathering provisions. Onakkodi (new clothes) are bought and given.
Thiruvonam
Cook the full sadya — rice, sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, olan, kaalan, pachadi, kichadi, pickle, pappadam, banana chips and three or four payasam. Serve on a banana leaf with the prescribed order: from the left, pickle, chips and pappadam; the curries arranged around the rice; payasam last when you are almost done.
Thiruvonam
Complete the pookalam with the final layer, place a clay figure of Mahabali or Thrikkakara Appan, and the family gathers around it before the meal.
This is where most festival sites give one national answer to a question that has several.
Pulikali tiger dance at Swaraj Round in Thrissur is the state's most spectacular Onam public event, with performers painted and dancing all day.
Vallam Kali snake boat races, with the Nehru Trophy on Punnamada Lake the largest, and the Aranmula Uthrattathi boat race on the Pamba river.
Onam is celebrated with the same pookalam and sadya, with local variations in the sadya dishes and less emphasis on the boat races.
Onam is the most widely celebrated Kerala festival abroad, with community sadyas and pookalam competitions organised by Malayali associations in the Gulf and in Western cities.

Start with a single ring on Atham and add one layer of flowers each day, building outwards. Use whatever flowers are available that day — a fresh, seasonal mix reads better than a uniform bought carpet.
Budget: ₹300–₹1,500
A white cloth with a gold border hung at the door with a marigold toran. The kasavu palette — white and gold — is the Kerala festive signature and reads better than multicolour for Onam.
Budget: ₹300–₹1,000
Lay fresh banana leaves at each place with a brass tumbler and small bowls arranged in the standard order. Setting the leaf correctly is half the aesthetic of the meal.
Budget: ₹200–₹600
A small clay Thrikkakara Appan figure placed at the centre of the pookalam on Thiruvonam. In many Kerala homes this is also called Onathappan.
Budget: ₹150–₹500
Including a note on why each dish belongs to this festival.
The defining Onasadya dish — a thick mixture of nine or more vegetables with coconut and curd, and the one that most non-Malayalis know by name.

Thiruvonam, the main day of Onam, falls in late August 2026. The ten-day festival begins with Atham about a week and a half earlier. Confirm the exact dates against a Malayalam calendar, as Onam follows the nakshatra rather than a fixed lunar day.
It marks the annual return of King Mahabali, the legendary ruler of Kerala whose reign was so just that the gods, feeling threatened, sent Vamana to end it. Vamana granted him a yearly visit, which is Onam.
Pookalam is a circular floral carpet laid at the entrance, built up in rings over the ten days of Onam, with a new layer of flowers added each day. It is the festival's central visual practice.
A full Onasadya has around 26 vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf, including rice, sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, olan, kaalan, pachadi, kichadi, pickle, pappadam, banana chips and two to four payasams. There is a prescribed serving order.
Yes. Onam is observed by Hindu, Muslim and Christian households in Kerala, which makes it unusual among Indian festivals. It is a state festival rather than a religious one.
