Onam is Kerala's largest festival, a ten-day harvest celebration that culminates on Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam. In 2026 Thiruvonam falls in late August. It is the one major Indian festival observed across every religion in a state — Hindu, Muslim and Christian households in Kerala all celebrate Onam.
The festival commemorates the homecoming of Mahabali, the legendary king of Kerala whose reign was so prosperous and just that the gods grew uneasy and sent Vamana to end it. Vamana granted Mahabali the boon of returning to visit his people once a year, and Onam is that annual visit. Unlike most Indian festivals, it involves no fasting, no idol worship and no fire — it is entirely about food, flowers and community.
The pookalam is the festival's visual signature: a circular floral carpet laid in the courtyard, grown in complexity over the ten days, with a new layer added each day. The Onasadya, the elaborate vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf on Thiruvonam, has a rigid order of dishes, and is genuinely one of the largest meals in the Indian culinary tradition. Snake boat races (vallam kali) at Aranmula and Nehru Trophy, and the Pulikali tiger dance, are the festival's public spectacles.
Onam is also the state's biggest retail season, and Kerala's government runs Onam markets and consumer fairs to cap prices on essential goods during the period.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
Pulikali tiger dance at Swaraj Round in Thrissur is the state's most spectacular Onam public event, with performers painted and dancing all day.
Vallam Kali snake boat races, with the Nehru Trophy on Punnamada Lake the largest, and the Aranmula Uthrattathi boat race on the Pamba river.
Onam is celebrated with the same pookalam and sadya, with local variations in the sadya dishes and less emphasis on the boat races.
Onam is the most widely celebrated Kerala festival abroad, with community sadyas and pookalam competitions organised by Malayali associations in the Gulf and in Western cities.
