Atham (day 1)
Lay the first ring of the pookalam at the entrance with a simple circle of yellow flowers. It grows by a layer each day.
Days 1–9
Add flowers daily, and prepare for the Thiruvonam feast by gathering provisions. Onakkodi (new clothes) are bought and given.
Thiruvonam
Cook the full sadya — rice, sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, olan, kaalan, pachadi, kichadi, pickle, pappadam, banana chips and three or four payasam. Serve on a banana leaf with the prescribed order: from the left, pickle, chips and pappadam; the curries arranged around the rice; payasam last when you are almost done.
Thiruvonam
Complete the pookalam with the final layer, place a clay figure of Mahabali or Thrikkakara Appan, and the family gathers around it before the meal.
