The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Makar Sankranti follows Solar — the sun's transit into Capricorn (Makar), usually 14 or 15 January. The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Makar Sankranti 2026
Makar Sankranti falls on Wednesday 14 January 2026. Because it is a solar festival it does not drift with the lunar calendar, and almost all of India observes it on the same date.
Sesame and jaggery are warming foods, which matters because the festival falls in the coldest part of the winter. Both are also newly harvested or newly made, so eating them is a way of marking the harvest.
Pongal in Tamil Nadu coincides with Makar Sankranti and is the same solar event, but it is celebrated over four days — Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal — with its own rituals.
Uttarayan is the sun's northward movement, which begins on Makar Sankranti and is considered the auspicious half of the solar year. In Gujarat the day is called Uttarayan and is the kite-flying festival.
