Muharram 2026
Muharram follows 1 to 10 Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar; Ashura on the tenth. It runs for about 10 days in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The most elaborate Muharram observance in India. The Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara are central, the taziya-making tradition is a recognised craft, and the Ashura procession is one of the largest in the world.
The Bibi ka Alam procession is the city's largest, and the Deccani marsiya and noha traditions are distinct from the Awadhi ones. Khichda is the characteristic Muharram dish.
Processions in the old city around Jama Masjid, Matia Mahal and Karbala, with a long-established zuljanah and alam tradition.
The Murshidabad and Hooghly districts have a distinctive Muharram tradition that predates and is largely independent of the Awadh tradition, with its own taziya forms and local participation.
Large Ashura processions through the old city, with sabeel stalls and taziya processions organised by mohalla committees.
