Eight days in Bhadrapada, ending on Samvatsari; the Digambar Das Lakshan runs ten days
Paryushan is the most important festival of the Jain year, observed over eight days (among Shvetambars) or ten days (the Digambar Das Lakshan Parva) in the month of Bhadrapada. In 2026 the Shvetambar Paryushan falls in September, ending on Samvatsari.
It is a period of intense self-discipline rather than celebration. Devotees fast — some for the entire eight days with only boiled water, others for alternate days — and increase their study of scripture, meditation and recitation of the Namokar Mantra. Many Jains reduce or give up their normal work during the period.
The central concept is the purification of the soul through restraint and introspection. During Paryushan, Jains examine their conduct over the past year, and the period ends with the practice of pratikraman — a formal, detailed ritual of reflection in which past actions are reviewed and forgiveness is sought.
The final day, Samvatsari, is the day of universal forgiveness. The greeting on that day is 'Michhami Dukkadam' — roughly, 'if I have caused you any hurt, may it come to nothing'. Jains send this greeting to everyone they know, including people they are estranged from, and it is one of the most distinctive practices in any Indian faith. The greeting is now commonly sent by message and email, which has made Samvatsari a widespread public observance well beyond the Jain community.

Michhami Dukkadam. If I have hurt you in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, may it come to nothing.
Wishing you a meaningful Paryushan. Michhami Dukkadam.
Paryushan and Samvatsari greetings. May we all be forgiven and forgive.
Michhami Dukkadam — to everyone I know, and everyone I don't.
In the order a household actually does them.
Days 1–7
Fast according to your capacity and increase study of the scriptures. Most Jains attend the temple daily and listen to the daily discourse on the Kalpa Sutra and Mahavira's teachings.
Daily
A structured ritual of reflection in which the devotee reviews their actions, recites the appropriate sutras, and seeks forgiveness for past transgressions. It is performed daily during Paryushan and is the period's central religious practice.
Final day — Samvatsari
The most intensive pratikraman of the year is performed, often running several hours. Afterwards, the greeting Michhami Dukkadam is sent to everyone, with the intention of seeking forgiveness for any hurt caused over the past year.
After Samvatsari
Those who have been fasting break it with a light meal. A community meal or charity distribution is common.

The Kalpa Sutra is read daily during Paryushan, so a good edition or a complete scripture set is the most on-theme gift.

Paryushan 2026 falls in September, with Samvatsari on the last day. Shvetambar Paryushan runs eight days and Digambar Das Lakshan runs ten. Confirm the exact dates against a Jain calendar, as the two traditions differ.
It means roughly 'may my wrongdoings come to nothing'. It is said on Samvatsari to seek forgiveness from everyone, including people you are estranged from. It is now commonly sent by message as well as in person.
Pratikraman is a formal ritual of reflection and repentance in which the devotee reviews their past actions, recites the appropriate sutras, and asks for forgiveness. It is performed daily during Paryushan, most intensively on Samvatsari.
It varies widely. Some devotees fast for the full eight days taking only boiled water, others fast on alternate days or take a single meal a day, and many observe a partial fast. The level is chosen according to health and capacity — Jain practice does not require an eight-day waterless fast.
They are the same period observed differently. Shvetambar Jains observe Paryushan over eight days ending on Samvatsari; Digambar Jains observe the ten-day Das Lakshan Parva, focused on the ten virtues.
