Paryushan 2026
Paryushan follows Eight days in Bhadrapada, ending on Samvatsari; the Digambar Das Lakshan runs ten days. It runs for about 8 days nationally.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The largest Jain population in India, and the period is observed most visibly here. Shvetambar Paryushan runs eight days ending on Samvatsari, and business activity in Surat and Ahmedabad visibly slows.
Significant observance in Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur, with temple-based pratikraman and large community gatherings on Samvatsari.
Observed by the Jain community across Rajasthan, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, with the Digambar Das Lakshan Parva running ten days in some communities.
Observed by the Jain communities in Karnataka and in Chennai, with temple-based pratikraman and daily scripture reading.
