Republic Day 2026
Republic Day follows 26 January, the date the Constitution of India came into force in 1950. It runs for about 1 day in the regions where it is observed.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The national parade on Kartavya Path, with the chief guest, state tableaux, and the flypast. Beating Retreat at Vijay Chowk three days later. The Delhi parade is the day's focal point nationally.
Kite flying on 26 January is traditional in Ahmedabad and parts of Gujarat, with rooftops filling through the day. It is distinct from the January 14 Uttarayan, but similar in form.
State-level parades with the chief minister taking the salute, tableaux, march pasts and cultural performances, held on the morning of 26 January.
State-level parades and flag-hoisting ceremonies with significant public attendance, and in Srinagar and the Northeast capitals the day is a major public event.
State parades with tableaux, cultural performances and school contingents, held on Marina Beach road in Chennai and on the main parade grounds in the other state capitals.
