Republic Day is observed on 26 January, marking the day the Constitution of India came into force in 1950 and India became a republic. In 2026 it falls on a Monday. It is a national holiday across India.
The centrepiece is the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, which runs from Rashtrapati Bhavan past India Gate — the stretch now called Kartavya Path. It opens with the Prime Minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, followed by the President's address and the parade itself: military contingents and equipment, a display of indigenous defence systems, tableaux from every state and several union ministries, schoolchildren's performances, and a flypast that concludes with the Amrit formation.
A foreign head of state is the chief guest each year, a tradition that began with Indonesia's President Sukarno in 1950. The parade ends with the Beating Retreat ceremony three days later on 29 January, held at Vijay Chowk.
The day is celebrated at the state level too, with parades and flag-hoisting ceremonies in every capital, and in schools, colleges and neighbourhoods across the country. It is one of the most universally observed days in India, cutting across region, religion and community.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
