Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, is considered one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu year for acquiring anything of lasting value. In 2026 it falls on 19 April. The word akshaya means inexhaustible, and the belief is that any good deed, purchase or beginning made on this day returns many times over.
It is the largest gold-buying day of the Indian year after Dhanteras, and jewellers run their biggest campaigns around it. It is also a major day for buying property, booking weddings, and starting new businesses — wedding halls across India are booked heavily for this date, and it is one of the few days on which a wedding can be held without consulting a separate muhurat.
The day's stories include the descent of the Ganga to earth, the beginning of the Treta Yuga, Parashurama's birth, and — most importantly for the practical rituals — the day Ved Vyasa began writing the Mahabharata and the day Sudama's simple gift of flattened rice to Krishna was returned to him a hundredfold. That last story is why giving and receiving on this day is considered so productive.
The day is also important in the Jain community as Akshaya Tritiya, marking the breaking of Rishabhanatha's fast with sugarcane juice and the start of the practice of charity in the Jain tradition.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
The strongest commercial observance. Jewellers launch their annual schemes, and gold, silver and property purchases peak. In Rajasthan it is Akha Teej, an important day for weddings.
Muhurat trading on the stock exchanges is held on Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali. Gold buying and new business registrations both peak.
Observed as Akshaya Tritiyai, with Lakshmi puja, gold purchases, and the start of new ventures. In Karnataka the day is considered auspicious for the first entry in new account books.
Akha Teej, with sattu and barley offered, and the day treated as auspicious for weddings — this is one of the days when weddings are held without consulting a separate muhurat.
Gold and property purchases peak, and weddings are common. Charitable feeding is widely practised.
