Buddha Purnima 2026
Buddha Purnima follows Vaishakha Purnima (the full moon of the Hindu month of Vaishakha). It runs for about 1 day nationally.
A common question is why the date moves. The Hindu calendar is lunisolar: it tracks the moon for months and the sun for years, which means the civil date of a lunar festival drifts by up to about a fortnight from one year to the next. Islamic festivals follow the purely lunar Hijri calendar and move roughly eleven days earlier every year, subject to moon sighting. A handful of festivals — Makar Sankranti, Vaisakhi, Pongal and the other solar ones — stay on nearly the same date. The entry below tells you which of these applies here.
The principal Indian site, where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree. Large gatherings of monks and pilgrims from across the Buddhist world, with the Mahabodhi temple at the centre.
Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and Kushinagar, where he died, are the two other principal Indian sites, both holding major Vesak observances.
Vesak is observed widely in India's Himalayan Buddhist regions, with monastery rituals, mask dances and prayer flag ceremonies.
A public holiday in Maharashtra, reflecting the state's large Ambedkarite Buddhist population. Observances are held at viharas across Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Aurangabad.
Observed by Buddhist communities in Karnataka, and in Tamil Nadu at sites associated with the historical Buddhist presence in the state.
Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace and now in Nepal, holds the largest Vesak gathering in the region, with pilgrims from across South and Southeast Asia.
