Sized for an actual doorway, courtyard or floor rather than for a photograph.
A brass bowl with lotus flowers and a few peepal or bodhi leaves, placed beside a Buddha image with a single white candle. Peepal leaves are the specific symbol — the Buddha attained enlightenment under a peepal tree.
Typical spend: ₹200–₹800
Paper or cloth lanterns hung along the balcony and a candle lit at dusk. Lantern processions are the festival's visual signature across Theravada countries, and a simple balcony version works anywhere.
Typical spend: ₹300–₹1,200
White cloth, a Buddha statue or image, a small brass lamp and a bowl of water with floating flowers. Buddhist shrine aesthetics are deliberately spare — resist adding colour.
Typical spend: ₹200–₹1,000
Most rangoli failures are symmetry failures. Draw the outer circle with a compass or a plate, then divide it into equal wedges with chalk. You can pour colour over the chalk and it disappears.
Dry rice flour holds an edge far better than wet powder and is what the traditional doorway versions are drawn with. Keep a small bowl separate for touch-ups.
Layers added from the middle keep the shape honest. Working inwards tends to leave you compressing the last ring to fit, which is what makes a rangoli look rushed.
A lightly damp floor holds powder. A wet one makes it bleed. One pass with a damp cloth on a stone floor is enough; back off completely on tile with a glossy finish.
