The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Buddha Purnima follows Vaishakha Purnima (the full moon of the Hindu month of Vaishakha). The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Buddha Purnima 2026
Buddha Purnima 2026 falls in early May, on Vaishakha Purnima. Because different Buddhist traditions use different calendars, the Gregorian date can differ by a few days between countries — check the local observance.
The Buddha's birth, his enlightenment and his parinirvana (death) are all traditionally dated to the same full moon of Vaishakha. Vesak therefore marks all three on one date, which is unique among major religious festivals.
Bathe and wear white, visit a temple or vihara, offer flowers and candles, attend a dhamma talk, meditate, give dana or alms, and eat vegetarian. Lantern processions are held in the evening in many countries.
The intention is compassion, but the practice is criticised by conservationists because non-native species are often released and do not survive, and some released species become invasive. If you want to mark the day with animal welfare, donating to a shelter is more effective and does not carry the same risk. Some Indian states also regulate the release of certain species.
