Janmashtami marks the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, on the eighth tithi of the dark half of Bhadrapada. In 2026 it is Friday 4 September. Because the tradition also requires the Rohini nakshatra, the observance is sometimes split across two days, with the vrat and fast on the first and the puja on the second.
The central ritual is a night-long fast broken at midnight, the hour of Krishna's birth, with a puja to the infant Krishna, a small swing (jhula) and a serving of panjiri or charnamrit. In homes with small children, a tiny idol is placed in a cradle and the family sings bhajans until midnight.
The second day belongs to Dahi Handi in Maharashtra, when teams of young men form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above a street. It is a competitive, organised event with prize money, and it is also the festival's most injury-prone tradition — several hundred people are hospitalised in Mumbai each year. Courts have repeatedly issued safety directions, including age restrictions and insurance requirements for organisers.
In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra, the same day is Gokulashtami, with butter and avalakki offerings, tiny footprints drawn from the doorstep to the puja room, and Gokulashtami kolam. In Manipur the festival is one of the state's biggest, with Ras Lila performances that run for days.
Almost every large Indian festival means something different in different states. That is not a contradiction — it is the history.
The birthplace. Temples run continuous celebrations, with lakhs of pilgrims visiting Krishna Janmabhoomi and the Banke Bihari temple. Chhappan bhog and night-long bhajan are standard.
Dahi Handi is the defining event, with hundreds of organised govinda teams building human pyramids to break pots hung several storeys high. Safety regulation is a continuing court matter — organisers are required to provide mats, medical cover and age limits.
Gokulashtami, with butter, avalakki and seedai offerings, tiny footprints drawn from the door to the puja area, and kolam outside. It is a home festival rather than a street one.
Janmashtami and Ras Lila are among the state's largest festivals, with Ras Lila performances by troupes across the valley, sometimes running for several days.
Observed with night-long bhajan and bhagavata katha, and in Nathdwara and Dwarka with major temple celebrations. Gujarat's Shrinathji shrines treat the festival as one of the year's biggest.
