The window, the reason it is that window, and an honest answer about what we will not publish.
Krishna Janmashtami follows Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada, ideally with Rohini nakshatra. The ritual window is set by the tithi and by the position of the moon relative to the lagna for your location — which is why the same festival has a slightly different puja window in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai even though the civil date is the same.
Because of that, we do not publish city-by-city muhurat minutes. Getting a muhurat wrong is a genuinely harmful error — people plan their day, their travel and their leave around it — and we cannot verify every city against a reliable panchang. A number we cannot stand behind is worse than telling you where to look.
For the exact window in your city, check a location-specific panchang or your family’s usual almanac. What we can tell you reliably is the date, the day of the week, whether it is a multi-day observance, and where the date itself differs between regions — all of which is below.

Krishna Janmashtami 2026
Krishna Janmashtami falls on Friday 4 September 2026. Because the observance also requires the Rohini nakshatra, some sources split the vrat and the puja across 4 and 5 September — check your local panchang.
Krishna is said to have been born at midnight in a prison in Mathura. The fast is kept through the day and broken at the birth hour, after the puja and aarti.
Panjiri, makhan-mishri (white butter and rock sugar), chhappan bhog, tulsi leaves, and charnamrit. In South Indian homes, venna, avalakki and seedai are standard.
It is the most injury-prone festival tradition in India, and Mumbai hospitals treat several hundred injuries around Janmashtami each year. Courts have required organisers to provide safety mats, insurance and ambulances, and Maharashtra restricts participation by age. Watching is the safer choice.
